Terms we use, and what they mean here

A few phrases come up often enough that they deserve a plain definition. These are the readings we apply when reviewing entries and when writing the archive, so a disagreement about wording does not turn into a disagreement about the work.

Technical check

A pass over file specs, category fit and rights clearance. It happens before scoring and is not a judgment on the idea. An entry that stalls here has not been ranked, only held.

Category fit

The category you choose should describe what the work is, not where you would prefer it to sit. A packaging piece entered under digital craft is read as a mismatch, not a strategy.

Rights clearance

Typefaces, images, sound and collaborator credits need to be accounted for at submission. Missing clearance is the most common reason a strong entry never reaches the jury.

Shortlist

Work that cleared the technical check and was scored by the jury. Being shortlisted is a record of that cycle, not a ranking against entries from other years.

Jury notes

Written remarks published alongside shortlisted work, explaining how the piece was read and how the category was interpreted. They are not individual feedback to entrants.

Cycle

One annual round with its own jury, deadline calendar and archive. Criteria carry over in spirit, but each cycle argues its own reading of the categories.

Where a term is not listed here, we use it in its ordinary sense. Anything about scoring, quotas or outcomes that is not written in the archive or the calendar is not part of the process.
